Other Site Characteristics

Bjärhult is situated in the southwestern part of Östergötland close to the big, oligotrophic lake Sommen. The surrounding landscape is dominated by wood. The bedrock is granite and the landscape is characterized by large crevices in the ground. The grassland around the farm Bjärhult consist of different kinds of pastures and one small meadow surrounding the buildings. In the pastures also small, old fields are included and managed together with the pastures by grassing cattles. The trees dominating in the pastures are Quercus robur, Betula verrucosa, Fraxinus excelsior, Sorbus intermedia, Prunus avium and Ulmus glabra. Bushes of Corylus avellana, Crataegus sp., Rosa sp and Juniperus communis are common. The flora in the different pastures and in the meadow are rich and a number of different vegetationtypes from dry to wet are represented. In the meadow the following species reminds of the management during long time; Scorzonera humilis, Primula veris, Crepis praemorsa, Hypochoeris maculata, Trollius europeaus and Rhinanthus minor. In the pastures the diversity of species is high and examples of species are; Briza media, Helianthemum nummularium, Leontodon hispidus, Platanthera bifolia and Polygala vulgaris. In the pastures a number of mounds of stones are found as well as old trees that have earlier been used for leave-harvesting. Some interesting wood-fences and an old road are also found in the site.
