Other Site Characteristics

Vida Vättern - is situated along the eastern shore of lake Vättern where the bedrock descends abruptly to the water. A large area with warmth-demanding deciduous trees grow on the slopes below the old national highway. The forest is dominated by ash and elm. Hazel dominates the bush layer. The ground flora is extremely rich in species with species typical for groves. On rocks and other substrata near the water there is a characteristic species composition with, for example, interesting snails, insects, and plants. The endangered smooth snake has been found in the area. North of Vida Vättern there is a steep mountain wooded by pine forest. This area does also house an interesting and valuable range of species. A bit further north by Grönlund-Västralid there is a warmth-demanding deciduous forest dominated by elm and maple. On the terraced slopes a grove flora extremely rich in species could be found. There is also a great deal of dead wood, fallen trunks of elm and maple.

4.2 Quality and importance

Along the eastern side of Vättern there is a large, valueable area with nature from the hilly slope just north of Jönköping in the south to the town Ödeshög in the north. Vida Vättern is a little part of this area. At Vida Vättern groves broad-leaved deciduous trees and because the Lake Vättern is in close connection to this area, the humidity is very high. The climate gives a special flora and fauna in the area, with unusual landmolluscs for example. The site is of national interest in nature as well as recreation and is, to some extent, protected by law (MB 4:th chap. 2§).
