Other Site Characteristics

Bjäsätter - is situated north of Lake Roxen in the northern woodlands of Östergötland. The surroundings are dominated by coniferous forests but in places cultivated farmland spreads out. The pasture land at Bjäsätter spreads out on the hill east of the village itself. The pastureland is large and is surrounded by dense coniferous forests. The low south part consists of grounds covered with numerous trees and shrubs. The major northern part gives an open impression with a great deal of heather and juniper. It has the character of outlying land. The part of the pasture which is rich in trees and shrubs is relatively flat but rich with boulders. The moist passage running through the pasture is covered by alder, birch, and hazel shrubs. In the moist open areas, there are cotton grass, globeflowers, and other tall-herb meadow vegetation. In the pasture, there is a large number of species typical for pasture lands. The open pasture with heather and juniper is rich with boulders. Flat rocks make it hilly. In places, bracken form a thick ground cover. Spruce and pine create two groves. In the border region of the forest birch, spruce and pine move in. The ground vegetation is mainly of a moor and dry meadow type. A great deal of Nardus stricta, Calluna vulgaris and Succisa pratensis grow here. Ajuga pyramidalis, Quaking grass and Euphrasia stricta are other species favoured by haymaking and grazing in the pasture. The rare Euphrasia micrantha, for example, could be found here. In the major part of the pastures no negative signs of fertilisation could be seen.

4.2 Quality and importance

Bjäsätter is a very valueable site with a large number of characteristic species represented in the pasture. Bjäsätter has only few similarities in Östergötland and is on the list of national conservation plan for the agricultural landscape and is also a site of national interest in nature and culture.
