Other Site Characteristics

The Kvillinge Fault - is situated north of Norrköping and constitutes the transition between the plain and the northern woodlands. By the fault, which is part of a big fault system, the flat cultivated landscape distinctly changes into woodland with a geologically interesting formation, a precipice. This precipice rises more than 50 m above the plain below, from Kvillinge in the east and five kilometres west. By the foot of the precipice there are layers of washed gravel and sand as well as sections of bouldery moraine. The precipice is covered by coniferous and mixed forests that are, for the most part, unaffected by modern forestry. Layers and small clumps of deciduous forest grow in the low regions. The forest is characterised by variation, a mixture in ages and richness in species. The ground moisture varies and in several places moving water percolates the surface. Further up on the precipice, where the soil layer is thin, there is a poor twig dominated pine forest in a hilly terrain. In the whole area there is a large amount of dead wood in the form of standing dead trees, windfall and fallen dead trees. The forest below Torsklint, one of five hillforts on the precipice, can be described as virgin forest and bears no traces of felling. There are many endangered species on the warm south-facing side.

4.2 Quality and importance

Kvillingeförkastningen is a very important site as a rest of a original, unaffected coniferous and broad-leaved deciduous forest. In the county of Östergötland only small areas of forests are not effected by forestry, but Kvillingeförkastningen is a relatively big area that is almost unaffected. The geological value is high as well, the site is a part of the long precipice north of Bråviken. There is a number of ancient remains, as five hillforts, in this site.
