Other Site Characteristics

Malmölandet is situated about 5 km northeast of Norrköping by the shore of Bråviken (Baltic sea). Old deciduous trees grow at the low moraine hills. Oak (Quercus robur) is the dominant treespecies. All of the area has previously been grazed but the grazing has stopped at about 60 %. A large part of Malmölandets oakdominated hills is old broad-leaved forest or pastureland formed by grazing. In the site there is hundreds of hollow oaks with mulm (inside oaks and another hollow trees; rests from the decay process consisting of woodpowder and small pieces of wood etc) and a lot of old Tilia cordata. This site host a unique beetle fauna and other insects connected to old broad-leaved trees like oak or T. cordata. There are also a number of lichens found in this site dependent of mostly the big and old oaks. In the site the Hermit beetle, Osmoderma eremita, is found in a number of trees

Hundreds of hollow and old oaktrees gives this site unique qualities of insectfauna and lichenflora. The site is quite large, and cattle graze a big part of the area.

The parts of the site that is grazed is managed with agri-environmental aid from EU and Sweden. Thera is also a management plan included to this aid. This aid will at least continue until 2005.
