Other Site Characteristics

Stora mossen väster om Igelfors utgörs av ett stort komplex av kärr, mossar och fastmarker. Större delen av myren är ett topogent kärr med både fastmattor och mjukmattor. Längs kanterna finns zoner av svagt välvda mossar och öblandmyrar. Mossarna kan vara såväl öppna som tallbevuxna. I sydost ligger den lilla Karpe tärn. Någon gång förekommer stråk av sumpskog längs kanterna, bevuxna av björk och tall. Längs sydvästra kanten och delvis över myren löpte tidigare en luftledning. Denna är nu borttagen men stubbarna efter stolparna står kvar. Spåren efter de motorfordon man använt är mycket tydliga. Där ledningen tidigare gick fram finns en spång över myren. Spritt över området finns ett fyrtiotal fastmarksöar av olika storlek, dessutom går ett antal halvöar ut i myren. Flora och fauna Mossar med ett slutet skikt av tall har ofta skvattram och odon i buskskiktet. Öppna mossar är oftast bevuxna av ristuvor med arter såsom ljung, kråkris, tranbär, rosling, hjortron, räffelmossa Aulacomnium palustre, rostvitmossa Sphagnum fuscum, tallvitmossa S. capillifolium, rubinvitmossa S. rubellum och myrmylia Mylia anomala. Speciellt ut mot myrens kanter är tuvull vanlig. I kärret och på gungflyn växer trådstarr, dystarr, vitag, vattenklöver, kallgräs, tuvsäv, myggblomster, storsileshår, rundsileshår, tuvull och sotvitmossa Sphagnum papillosum. Enligt litteraturen häckar förmodligen enkelbeckasin, ljungpipare och ängspiplärka. Orrspel ska förekomma. Trana, gräsand, knipa, ormvråk, grönbena, skogsduva, ringduva, gök, buskskvätta, törnskata, hämpling, spillkråka, tofsvipa och skogssnäppa ska tidigare ha häckat på myren eller i omgivningarna. Vid Gultebo väster om myren har storspov åtminstone tidigare häckat och tidvis uppehållit sig på myren. Färska uppgifter om häckfågelfaunan saknas till stor del. Trana har setts 2002 och grönbena 1993.

Stora mossen (Igelfors) is an valueable and well conserved example of a raised bog. The bog is varied and large with an interesting flora and fauna. The site is also a important breeding-site to birds, common on this type of wetland.
