Ljungbyån rinner genom en mycket jämn moränplatå med ytterligt små höjdskillnader. På vissa partier korsar vattendraget isälvsavlagringar. Beggrunden utgörs av sura urbergarter. I anslutning till ån finns flera mycket värdefulla våtmarker och odlingsmarker.Ljungbyån mellan Flerohopp och Trekanten kännetecknas både i stor och liten skala av ett synnerligen välutbildat system av bifurkationer (vattendrag med delat lopp). Huvudfåran bildar två skilda strömmar. I det storskaliga mönstret ingår även de båda mycket små vattendragen Kölebäcken och Äspebäcken, av vilka den senare på nytt delas efter halva sitt lopp. Av de tre bäckarna mynnar två i Sankt Sigfridsån och en i den egentliga Ljungbyån. Hela förloppet är anmärkningsvärt och visar hur vattnet beter sig då det rinner genom en extremt flack terräng.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ljungbyån rinner genom en mycket flack moränplatå. Vissa delar har ett starkt meandrande lopp med välutbildade bifurkationer. Utmed ån, som delar sig i två huvudfåror, finns värdefulla våtmarker. Åförloppet är av stort geohydrologiskt intresse. Ljungbyån hyser en skyddsvärd stam av storvuxen havsöring. Utefter ån finns växtlokaler för hårklomossa.
