Other Site Characteristics
| Large areas with impressive coastal dunes along the shore of the bay Hanöbukten. During the 18th century the need for wood for fires and building was very large, and most of the forest in the areas was cut down resulting in severe problems with erosion by wind. In the early 19th century large-scale plantations of pine managed to tie up the sand. The plantations are now turning into old-growth pine forest. |
4.2 Quality and importance
| The coastal dunes host a number of rare and threatened plants such as Corynephorus canescens and Dianthus arenarius. With the dry grassland plants also comes a number of rare lepidoptera. The sandy ground below the pine forest is covered by thick carpets of lichens (notably Cetraria, Cladonia and Cladina spp.) and mosses. |
