4.2 Quality and importance
Hällingsåfallets Nature Reserve. An impressive nature scene.Hällingsåfallets living canyon is one of the largest in Sweden. The waterfall has a vertical drop of 42 meters and its canyon is an 800 meter long gorge. There are different theories on how the canyon developed. According to Ängeby (1946), water flowing over the ledge for a long period of time loosened layers of shale thereby causing the shelf to recede and the canyon to be formed. But knowledge changes - and nowadays most would probably agree that the canyon was formed by the melting waters from the latest glacial recession. This flowing water caused a crevasse in the bed-rock to widen, thus creating the canyon. In order to truly see the canyon formation, we recommend that you park the car at the rest area along the road about half way up to the falls. From there, youll see a marked path which follows Hällingsån upstream. Even though its about a 2.6 km. walk to the falls, its well worth the trouble. It would bea good idea to wear wellington boots. Take notice of how the spring ice flow has damaged the trees along the stream. If you have difficulty walking, you can of course drive to the parking lot. From thereaccess to the falls is easy, even for wheelchairs. |
