Other Site Characteristics
The reserve (51 ha), situated in Kalix's inner archipelago, consists of the island Massan (7 ha) and the surrounding water. The island is low-laying and flat. The soils are poorly developed with till parent materials. The northern part of the island is covered with birch trees with a few smaller spruce, pines and alder mixed in. There is a paucity of ground vegetation in the central part of the island, where large areas are covered with leaf litter or moss covered stones. Where the ground cover is more developed the most common species are Deschampia cespitosa (Tufted Hair grass), D flexuosa (Wavy Hair grass), Carex nigra (Common sedge), Lycopodium annotinum (Club moss), and Empetrum nigrum (Crowberry). Cornus suecia (Dwarf Cornell) and Trientalis europaea (Chickweed Wintergreen) are less commonly found. Wood cutting has been carried out on the island, resulting in a lack of dying and dead wood and the associated wood fungi. Between the forest and the beach there is a shrub belt consisting of a thicket of birches, mountain ash and willows. The south-east part of the island is a wide stone/fine sediment beach which gradually changes into wide and stony shoal. The shoal is treeless, but has a shrub community consisting of Myrica gale and Salix sp. Other species present are Carex spp.(Sedges), Scirpus spp (rushes), Calamagrostis stricta (Narrow Small-reed), Juncus balticus (Baltic rush) and Potentilla arserina ssp egedii (Silverweed). |
4.2 Quality and importance
There is little human disturbance and the islands are an important refugium for the archipelago's flora and fauna. The vegetation is influenced by the brackish water environment and the ongoing land upheaval which results in a succession of different vegetation types. These land upheaval pioneer vegetation communities, which are also exposed to harsh (windy and dry) climate, are unique from an ecological perspective. Several of the islands support a rich avian fauna. The islands are also interesting from a geomorphologic perspective as there are many examples of how upheaval landforms are affected by wind and wave action. |
