Other Site Characteristics

The Reikkola-Välivaara nature reseverve is just two kilometres south of Haparanda and is situated on the Norrbotten Coastal Plain at the edge of the Torneå River delta. As is typical for the coastal plain the area is quite flat with little differences in elevation, the highest points are the two hills after which the reserve is named. They are 15 m. asl.. The area is still undergoing postglacial crustal uplift, which is reflected in both the landscape and the vegetation. Shingle fields on both the hills clearly indicate old beach lines. Kuusilathi, a deep bay in the southern part of the reserve is in the process of being cut-off from the sea as a result of the crustal uplift. The entire successional gradient of vegetation communities, from Baltic sea meadows to mature spruce forests are found in the reserve. The many successional communities gives rise to a species-rich flora, at least 250 species of vascular plants are present. The litoral zone is wide and shallow, resulting in four banded vegetation communities with a band of arrow-head (Sagittaria sagittifolia) furthest out and a band of meadow vegetation dominated by sedges up along the beach. The east and north-east part of the reserve are dominated by deciduous thickets consisting of mainly of willow and alder, with the occasional birch, aspen, spruce and rowan mixed in. The herb layer is lush and species rich. The most commonly found vegetation type in the reserve is spruce/bilberry/feathermoss. Birch and rowan are common in this vegetation type. A well-developed herb-layer is found on the more humid sites. There is a small area where the herb-layer is dominated by Northern Buckler-fern (Dryopteris expansa). Several wetland areas are present in the area, most of the nutrient poor. The exception is the cut-off part of Kuusilathi, which is species rich. This area is an important nesting and rest area for water-fowl, and is the reason that the nature reserve was created. The area has been exposed to a fair amount of human disturbance. There is a ski-trail in the reserve and an overgrown hay meadow. There are a number of summer cottages around the perimeter of the reserve.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is a fine example of postglacial crustal lifting and the associated vegetation succession. There is a rich vascular flora and a rich avian fauna.
