Other Site Characteristics
| Vasikkavuoma is a northern alluvial meadow that today is subjected to restorations through clearing and mowing. The villages around Vasikkavuoma are mowing the grass on the mire with scythes to get hay for reindeers and to keep a part of Sweden's cultural heritage alive. Around 100 barns can be found on Vasikkavuoma and many of them are being used for storage of hay until winter when the hay is transported to the farm. To day around 80 hectares is being harvested and the haymaking area is increasing every year. In the beginning of the 20th century, a large part of the wetland in Norrbotten was used for haymaking to provide winter fodder for the cattle. Today only 0,1% of the earlier mowed wetland is in use. About 50 vascular plant species can be found on Vasikkavuoma and the mire is also a good staging site for many migrating birds. |
4.2 Quality and importance
| The site is one of the largest mires that still are mowed in Norrbotten. The large area, the good condition of the meadow and the drainage system, the many barns that still can be seen on the mire makes Vasikkavuoma to a living cultural heritage. The genuine interest of the villagers for there mire is unique and it is due to their work that the mire is, and will be kept in good shape also in the future. |
