Other Site Characteristics

Aktse is the highest elevation farmyard in Jokkmokk Parish. It is situated 500 meters above sea level where the Rapa River runs in Lake Laitaure. The farm was founded in the 1820's when Sirkassamen Petter Amundsson Länta acquired several cows and settled in Aktse. Today there are two farmyards, both owned by the Länta family. In the beginning the family lived mainly of hunting and fishing. It was not possible to grow grains, and sometimes even the potatoes were killed by frost. The rich sedge and horsetail river delta and the lush hay meadows provided nutritious fodder for the cows, horse, sheep and goats. The hay meadows, which were cleared forestland, were fertilised with manure in the spring and hayed every summer. They hay meadows were situated on a south facing slope which allowed them to be intentionally flooded to provide water and supplementary fertilisation. Most of the fodder, however, came from the delta which was hayed in the late fall when the delta had froze over. In the early 1900's the hay meadows and the delta provided at least 5 cows, 1 bull, 15-20 sheep and 10-15 goats with winter fodder. After the family quit farming in the 1940's the delta lands were no longer hayed. The hay meadows were hayed until 1963 when the horses were sold. In the end of the 1970's the Jokkmokk Conservation Society began once again to hay part of the meadow. The part of the meadows which are currently hayed consists of a mesic Geranium meadow vegetation type. Trollius europaeus, Rumex acetosa, and Geranium sylvaticum are abundant together with the grasses Anthoxanthum odoratum and Agrostis caprillis. The parts of the older hay meadow no longer in use are dominated by Deschampia cespitosa, Geranium sylvaticum, Filipendula ulmaria, and Trollius europaeus. Viola epipsila and Calamagrostis purpurea are abundant.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is an old meadow that has a long history of mowing. Cultivation started in the 1820s and the meadow is one of few mountain meadows that still are mowed. The part of the meadows, which are currently hayed, consists of a mesic Geranium meadow vegetation type. Trollius europaeus, Rumex acetosa, and Geranium sylvaticum are abundant together with the grasses Anthoxanthum odoratum and Agrostis caprillis.Since the end of the 1970s the meadow is managed by the Jokkmokk Conservation Society.
