Åbyälven is a natural river with no hydroelectric dams and a number of untamed rapids. The river has its springs in the county of Norrbotten and it is approximately 213 kilometres within the county. It continues in to the county of Västerbotten where it joins the sea. Prominent species in the river are naturally reproducing salmon (salmo salar), otter (Lutra lutra) and the shell (Margaritifera margaritifera). A characteristic of the river is the natural fluctuations of the water level due to seasonal reasons such as melting snow.The site is covered by the special provisions in the Swedish Environmental Code, Chapter 4 on management of land and water for certain areas in Sweden: provisions on prohibition of exploitation for hydro-electricity purposes (Chapter 4, § 6 in the Environmental Code). There is no code (protection type) available under field 5.1 to register this kind of general protection. The site includes only the river streams and not the riversides.

4.2 Quality and importance

Åbyälven is a natural river with no hydroelectric dams and a number of untamed rapids. Prominent species in the river are naturally reproducing salmon (Salmo salar), otter (Lutra lutra) and the bivalve (Margaritifera margaritifera). The river is characterised of natural fluctuations of the water level due to seasonal reasons such as melting snow. It is vital for the existing natural salmon populations to preserve these few rivers that still not have been dammed.
