Other Site Characteristics

The river Piteälven is one of four National Rivers in Sweden. The river is protected from construction of new power stations through the Swedish EnvironmentalCode. The river springs from the mountain areas of southern Lappland and empties into the Baltic by the town of Piteå. The river has many big stretches of smooth water such as Tjegglevas, Vuolvojaure, Muorsumjaure, Jäknajaure and Puoktajaure. There are several impressive rapids and falls of which Storforsen and Trollforsen are the largest ones. The river Piteälven was used for log driving until the end of the 1970s. A power station is located at Sikfors about 20 km up the river. The river is smaller than other mountain rivers in Sweden, both when it comes to the size of the catchment area and the water flow. In some of the tributaries there are Margaritifera margaritifera (river pearl mussels) and other threatened invertebrates. Lutra lutra (otter) exists (is found or occurs in is better than exists) in the river area. Salmo salar exits up to the large fall Storforsen. Other valuable species such as Cottus gobio, Salmo trutta and Thymallus thymallus habit the river.Sport fishing is very important for tourism along the river and gives the people living along the river a possibility to stay in an area where few other jobs are available.Området går genom två biogeografiska regioner. EU-kommissionen tog beslut om den alpina delen 200312 och den boreala delen 200501.
