Other Site Characteristics

Pyröenoja is a northern alluvial meadow which has been use for hay harvesting continuously since the 1750´s. No other meadow in Sweden has such a long history of continuos use. This makes Pyröenoja unique from both a culture and an ecological perspective. Production is enhanced with several ditches used to flood the mire at certain periods during the summer. The mire is mowed with scythes to get hay. This type of land-use is a part of Sweden's cultural heritage. In the beginning of the 20th century, a large part of the wetlands in Norrbotten were used for hay-making to provide winter fodder for the cattle. Today only 0.1% of the earlier mowed wetland is used as hay meadows. The mire is a good staging ground for many migrating birds. The farmer who utilises the land receives an agricultural-environmental grant from the European Community.
