Other Site Characteristics

The island Jvreholmen is situated in the south of Pite archipelago. Most of the small islands in the surroundings are part of the glaciofluvial esker of the river Pitelven. On these islands the forest is dominated of pine. The island Jvreholmen is the only larger island within Pite archipelago that is fire disturbed. The fire has resulted in a relatively large amount of aspen and sallow. Other indicators of fire are heavily burnt pine logs on the flat rocks in the south part of the island. Injuries from the fire can be seen on the stems of living pines. The amount of dead wood is especially high in the areas close to the beaches. Dead wood and the high percentage of aspen and sallow have created good conditions for several indicator species, for example polypores, other basidiomycetes and lichens. Birds spotted at the site are Dryocopus martius, Picoides auritus and Pandion haliaetus. Parts of the island consist of flat rocks with slowly grown pine forest, that also show traces of fire. In between the flat rocks and the productive forest are stands of very old slow growing spruce forest. The forest of Jvreholmen shows traces of selective cutting, but only a small area has been subjected to modern forestry. There are a few clear-cuttings, with a total area of approximately 30 ha, in the eastern part of the island. In the centre of the island grow a pine-dominated forest where all dead logs have been removed.

4.2 Quality and importance

The island of Jvreholmen is dominated by fire disturbed aspen and sallow rich coniferous forest, which is very rare in the southern part of the county of Norrbotten. The forest has high nature values with a high amount of dead wood and several red-listed species (Swedish red-list). The forest has not been highly affected by modern forestry.

The largest threat to the site is forestry measures that totally would change the structure and variation of the forest. Redlisted species that now easily are found at the site would get difficulties in surviving. Stenskr: Due to the short distance to nearest town the island gives visitors easy possibilities for openair life in the Norrbottnian archipelago. But the poorly growing vegetation, resulting in high vulnerability to frequent human activities. Most striking are the...
