Other Site Characteristics

Remaining semi-natural segments of the Vipava river in the western part of Slovenia. Important fish, amphibian habitat.

4.2 Quality and importance

The whole valley of Vipava river was heavily agriculturaly intensified in eighties. The site is designated for more or less natural reminders of the original state. In the river there are Cobitis taenia, Rutilus pigus, Chondrostoma genei, Alburnus albidus, Barbus meridionalis, Cotinus gobio, Lethenteron zanandreai and Unio crassus, as well as otter. Some records for Vertigo angustior. Along river there are some wetlands with Molinia grasslands and amphibians, most important of them being Rana latastei. This is habitat for butterflies (Maculinea teleius), as well. Part of the site is covered by illyrian oak/hornbeam and beech forests, habitat for Lucanus cervus and Cerambyx cerdo. Dense population of Coenagrium ornatum, important for Cordulegastor heros, as well.
