Other Site Characteristics
| The Snežnik - Pivka site is almost entirely covered with large prealpine-Dinaric beech forests with fir trees (86% of site). They form the second largest integral wooden area in Slovenia, largely uninhabited. Above the valley of Pivka River, forest slowly change into Karst meadows. |
4.2 Quality and importance
| Snežnik forests are famous for the Strix uralensis (30% Slovene population) with the highest population density in Europe. High karst plateau forest is also important for the Aegolius funereus. The extensive karst meadows are important for breeding population of Caprimulgus europaeus (10%), Alectoris graeca, Lullula arborea and Sylvia nisoria. Wet meadows in the valley are a home to Crex crex (5%). |
