Other Site Characteristics
| Cerknica lake is the largest Karst polje in Slovenia. Its character is more of a flooded plain than a real lake. Normally it is mainly dry in summer and in the late winter season. During autumn rain and after the spring snowmelts, it fills again. At full extent the lake can cover up to 26 km2. |
4.2 Quality and importance
| Cerknica lake is second most important breeding place for Crex crex in Slovenia (10% of national pop.) and also Porzana parva (50%) and Porzana porzana (50%). On the lake Aythya nyroca periodically breeds and it is also a feeding place for Haliaeetus albicilla. It is also an important breeding place for a large range of water and marsh bird species in Slovenia and in mild winters the lake is an important wintering place. |
