Other Site Characteristics
| The IBA Karst covers the Karst-Plateau plus the adjacent limestone of Podgrajski Kras, Matarsko podolje, mount Vremeica (1027m), mt. Slavnik (1028m), and Kraki rob (the Karst edge), which is a cascade of inland cliffs forming the south-west boundary of the sight. The whole area is covered by karst-phenomena, such as doline, caves, cenotes, sinking rivers, karst valleys etc. The climate is influenced by the vicinity of Adiatic sea. Karst is predominantly covered by secondary forest and Pinus nigra plantations (60%). The most important part of SPA is a mosaic of different successional phases including bare, stony ground, dry calcareous grasslands, and various kinds of scrublands (33%). Just few percents of the area are used for non-grassland agriculture and urban use. The avifauna includes mainly bush land and forest species as well as species of dry, open and rocky landscape. |
4.2 Quality and importance
| It is the most important SPA in Slovenia for Emberiza hortulana (70% of the national pop.), Lullula arborea (50%), Anthus campestris (60-70%), Circaetus gallicus (50%), Caprimulgus europaeus (50%), Sylvia nisoria (40%) and Bubo bubo (25%). |
