Other Site Characteristics

Dubnické štrkovisko gravel-pit is situated in Považské podolie valley in Ilavská kotlina basin on the left side of the Váh River close to the town Dubnica nad Váhom. Váh River is a hydrographical axis of the area. Geological basement of the site is built of the gravel-sand deposits of the Váh River deposited on the Neogene sea-borne sediments. Sedimentary gravels are covered with a fine-grained loess loam that creates a very suitable soil for agriculture in the surroundings. The gravel-pit originated as a result of gravel exploitation and subsequent overflowing with underground water. In this way suitable alternative conditions for habitats and species bound to the Váh River alluvium were created as far as original natural habitats has been strongly reduced by building-up of the river canal. In a marginal zone of the gravel-pit in a consequence of natural succession the vegetative types with nationally protected species originated as follows: vegetation communities of standing waters with Myriophyllum verticillatum, Utricularia vulgaris and with a close water contact with Carex viridula, Centaurium pulchellum, common reed and large sedge beds that participate on a land-filling process at maximum. From forest communities only the residuals of ash-alder alluvial forests occur here as far as majority of original alluvial forests within the Váh River alluvium were felled out and alluvial softwood forests also in a consequence of an underground water decrease changed to shrubby stands.
