Other Site Characteristics

Geological basement consists mostly of crystalline rocks in the eastern part, mesosoic rocks with different strata of calcites, dolomites and schists in the northwestern part and calcites and dolomites together with the tertiary layers of sandstones, conglomerates and gravels in the northern part of the site. Geomorphologically the site is of an upland character. There are several karst areas with superficial as well as subsurface karst structures bound to the calcareous basement of the site. Majority of the site is covered with deciduous forests, especially beech and oak stands. There are also mixed forests in places with artificial pine cultures in the northern part of the site. The composition is completed with small islands of meadows and rock and scree habitats. Border parts of the site represent a transition to the lowlands – they consist of the mosaic structure of grasslands, vineyards, orchards and arable land. There are also smaller parts in the area assigned for sport and recreation activities. Several stone quarries situated especially in the border parts are important landscape features of the site. Percentage within biogeographic regions: Alpine 97.067%, Pannonic 2.933%

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Falco cherrug, Pernis apivorus and Dendrocopos medius. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Bubo bubo, Caprimulgus europaeus, Ciconia nigra, Dendrocopos leucotos, Dendrocopos syriacus, Dryocopus martius, Falco peregrinus, Ficedula albicollis, Ficedula parva, Lanius collurio, Picus canus, Sylvia nisoria, Coturnix coturnix, Jynx torquilla, Muscicapa striata, Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Saxicola torquata, Streptopelia turtur and Aquila heliaca.
