Other Site Characteristics

The site consists of two parts that belong to different orographic units - Muránska planina and Stolické vrchy. Muránska planina is a karst plateau. It is built of extensive calcareous plain with representation of many karst phenomenon features. High biodiversity of the site is given except of different karst relief stands by phyto- and zoogeographical position of the area. Basement of Stolické vrchy Mts. is made of the crystalline complex rocks. Common characteristic of both the parts of the site is a substantial representation of forests that cover ca 88% of the site.

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Aegolius funereus. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Aquila chrysaetos, Bubo bubo, Ciconia nigra, Pernis apivorus, Tetrao tetrix, Caprimulgus europaeus, Strix uralensis, Picus canus, Dendrocopos leucotos, Dryocopus martius, Picoides tridactylus, Glaucidium passerinum, Bonasa bonasia, Ficedula parva, Ficedula albicollis, Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Falco peregrinus and Tetrao urogallus.
