Other Site Characteristics

Substantial part of the site is situated within the geomorphological unit Nízke Tatry Mts., other parts are situated within the untis Podtatranská kotlina valley and Horehronské podolie basin. In the eastern part the site is interfered with the unit Spišsko-gemerský kras karst area. Majority of the site is covered with deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests. Non-forest habitats are represented especially with natural and secondary alpine zones in the upper parts and the meadow communities in lower parts of the site. In the area of Demänovské vrchy hills and in the track formed by glaciers between the point elevations Chabenec - Štiavnica there is a substantial representation of the rock habitats. Geologically the site is a very complicated area. In the western part of the site the calcits and dolomites dominate in the north, biotite and two-mica gneisses, muscovitic and biotite granodiorites and granites dominate in the central part. Along the main edge especially from the northern side the glacial valleys and periglacial stone fields were created in the glacial age. The highest peak positions in the eastern part of the site are built of orthogneisses, granatite-muscovitic-biotite paragneisses, mica schists, sandstones of different colours, schists, conglomerates and melaphyres. In the area of Veľký bok there is a stripe of marl calcites and marls.

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Aquila chrysaetos, Tetrao tetrix, Tetrao urogallus, Picoides tridactylus, Aegolius funereus, Glaucidium passerinum and Bonasa bonasia. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Ciconia nigra, Aquila pomarina, Bubo bubo, Pernis apivorus, Dendrocopos leucotos, Picus canus, Dryocopus martius, Ficedula parva, Ficedula albicollis, Lanius excubitor, Coturnix coturnix, Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Muscicapa striata and Caprimulgus europaeus.
