Other Site Characteristics

The site is an extensive alluvium with mostly regulated (unregulated in the very western part only) meandring stream of the Ipeľ River. Majority of the river is accompanied with more-less original shore vegetation. pobrežnou vegetáciou. Alluvium consists substantially of an arable land, partially of mesophile hay-meadows and extensively used pastures. In general the site is characterised as an intensively used agricultural land with the enclaves of rare habitats especially in the western part of the site, where the rare habitats of standing waters, marshes and mesophile hay-meadows with a concentration of rare and endangered fauna and flora species occur.

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Ciconia ciconia, Lanius minor, Porzana parva, Porzana porzana, Alcedo atthis, Dendrocopos syriacus and is one of the five areas for nesting of Merops apiaster and Otus scops. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Sylvia nisoria, Coturnix coturnix, Galerida cristata, Riparia riparia, Saxicola torquata, Circus aeruginosus and Ixobrychus minutus.
