Other Site Characteristics

Ca 75% of the site is covered with forests, especially beech and fir-beech forests, lime-maple scree forests and thermophilous Pannonic oak forests. The rest of the site reperesents traditionally managed agricultural land, especially lowland and submountain hay-meadows, Sub-Pannonic steppic grasslands and xerophile and dealpine grasslands, partially overgrown with an initial succession stage of invasive woods species. Basement is built of carbonate rocks, especially calcites and dolomites that locally emerge to the surface. Soils are therefore strongly skeletal. Important features of the site are also the calcareous rocky slopes with chasmophytic vegetation, calcareous screes and underground holes, chasmes and caves. Part of the site represents NP Slovenský kras. Percentage within biogeographic regions: Alpine 60.45%, Pannonic 39.55%

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Sylvia nisoria, Caprimulgus europaeus and Monticola saxatilis. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Aquila pomarina, Botaurus stellaris, Bubo bubo, Ciconia nigra, Circaetus gallicus, Circus aeruginosus, Dendrocopos leucotos, Dendrocopos medius, Dryocopus martius, Falco cherrug, Falco peregrinus, Ficedula albicollis, Ficedula parva, Lanius collurio, Pernis apivorus, Picus canus, Strix uralensis, Coturnix coturnix, Jynx torquilla, Otus scops, Lullula arborea and Porzana porzana.
