Other Site Characteristics

Substantial part of the site is covered with the beech forests, in some places the forest of a primeval type can be found. The rest of the site consists of an agricultural land (pastures, meadows) mostly intensively managed. The site includes a part of lowland and the whole Vihorlat mountain range. Vihorlatské vrchy Mts. are a typical example of a volcanic origin. Basement is built of andesites and in the northwestern part also of calcites and dolomites. The soils are the andosols, cambisols and in the northwestern part also the pseudogleys. Percentage within biogeographic regions: Alpine 91.6%, Pannonic 8.4%

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Circaetus gallicus, Strix uralensis, Dendrocopos medius and is one of the five areas for nesting of Otus scops. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Aquila pomarina, Bonasa bonasia, Bubo bubo, Caprimulgus europaeus, Ciconia nigra, Crex crex, Dendrocopos leucotos, Dryocopus martius, Ficedula albicollis, Ficedula parva, Jynx torquilla, Lanius collurio, Lullula arborea, Pernis apivorus, Picus canus, Sylvia nisoria, Coturnix coturnix, Muscicapa striata, Phoenicurus phoenicurus, Saxicola torquata and Streptopelia turtur.
