Other Site Characteristics

The site is a part of the geomorphological unit Podunajská nížina Lowland, subunit Podunajská rovina Plain. Danube River was a principal relief-forming factor here. Geological basement is formed by gravels-sands and locally sands. Implementation of the flood control measures such as construction of dikes, channelling of Danube River, gravel mining to improve navigation, construction of the Gabčíkovo dam system, etc., had a distinctive impact to the current geomorphological pattern and hydrological regime of the site. Currently, the part of the river branch network is supplied with water through the man-made input structure nearby the Dobrohošť village. However, the part of the river branch network under the old port by Gabčíkovo suffers currently with a lack of water due to the drainage effect of the abandoned Danube River riverbed. In general, the hydrological regime of the site is highly artificial. Potential native vegetation is represented by communities of the willow-poplar floodplain forests of Salici-Populetum and mixed ash-elm-oak floodplain forests of Fraxino-Ulmetum. Wood species composition of nearly 80 % of the site has been changed in favour of the poplar cultivars (Populus x euroamericana).

4.2 Quality and importance

The largest inland delta in the Central Europe with the remnants of the native floodplain forests. The largest populations of the annexed fish species in Slovakia.
