Other Site Characteristics

From the topographic point of view, the site is valuable for the presence of travertine deposits of various age and degree of destruction. Dreveník Hill itself represents the largest travertine deposit of Slovakia. Specific microclimatic conditions of travertines promoted the evolution of unique plant and animal communities, assemblages truly unparalleled to other communities of the area. Composition of local flora more than that of fauna reflects the affect of intermittent Quaternary glacials and interglacials. Unique halophytic communities are to be found on youngest travertine deposits featuring still active springs of mineral waters.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is highly valued for the occurrence of travertine deposits fostering rare floristic and faunal communities of relic character within a great variety of halophyte, xerothermic grassland, rocky and forest habitats. The site fosters a rich population of species Slovakian pasque-flower Pulsatilla slavica and is also noted for an isolated population of Dracocephalum austriacum. Majority of the site has already been proclaimed some kind of small-scale protected area (national nature reserve, national nature monument or nature monument). The site represents the largest travertine complex of Slovakia and features the largest Slovak concentration of the habitat type 1340* Inland salt meadows that is found on recent travertines of Sivá Brada and near Baldovce. In addition, it supports characteristic and well-preserved xerothermic grasslands and dealpine rocky habitats with abundant occurrence of Slovakian Pasque-flower Pulsatilla slavica and Pulsatilla subslavica. Both species record here highest density of their populations in Slovakia. Dracocephalum austriacum occurs nowhere else in Slovakia but here and on the territory of the Slovenský kras / Slovak Karst. Resident population of this species is very isolated and represents the northern limit of its natural range. Annex fauna species are represented by a rich population of species Spermophilus citellus resident population of which is the largest on the northern edges of Hornádska kotlina Basin. Local karstic topography is typical for many caves that create ideal conditions for the presence of bat species.
