Other Site Characteristics

The site supports extensive tracts of semi-natural forest stands situated on the meeting points of Levočské vrchy Hills and Hornádska kotlina Basin featuring one of the last remaining fragments of Galio-Carpinetum oak-hornbeam forests in Slovakia. Uniquely well-preserved species composition of local stands, notably their understorey communities is underlined by specific forms of land management implemented in the past. Parts of the site have recently been subjected to direct conversions of coppice to high forest. Such radical steps can result in nothing else but dramatic change and gradual loss of native communities. Preference shall thus be given to low - key management measures whenever feasible.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is noted for the presence of exceptionally rare and plant geography important complex of 9170 Galio-Carpinetum oak-hornbeam forests, which are truly unique to the site and characteristic for only this region of Slovakia. Local forests represent the most intact complex of these forests in Slovakia and foster diverse plant communities in which not less contrast flora species as rare thermophilous and montane species are featured together (Adenophora liliifolia present on the site).
