- PF: for the habitat types that can have a non-priority as well as a priority form (6210, 7130, 9430) enter "X" in the column PF to indicate the priority form.
- NP: in case that a habitat type no longer exists in the site enter: x (optional)
- Cover: decimal values can be entered
- Caves: for habitat types 8310, 8330 (caves) enter the number of caves if estimated surface is not available.
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation)
3.2 Species referred to in Article 4 of Directive 2009/147/EC and listed in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC and site evaluation for them
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, I = Invertebrates, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
- Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)
3.3 Other important species of flora and fauna (optional)
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, Fu = Fungi, I = Invertebrates, L = Lichens, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- CODE: for Birds, Annex IV and V species the code as provided in the reference portal should be used in addition to the scientific name
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting, (see reference portal)
- Cat.: Abundance categories: C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present
- Motivation categories: IV, V: Annex Species (Habitats Directive), A: National Red List data; B: Endemics; C: International Conventions; D: other reasons

Other Site Characteristics
Carbonate rocks of the site gave an origin to distinctively karst landscape featuring all typical forms of so-called plateau karst such as sinkholes (more than 200), clints and grikes, widened V-shaped valleys, submersions, caves and abysses (more than 350). Karstic plateaux are mutually separated by epigenetic canyons of the Hornád and Hnilec Rivers, system of gorges and ravines noted for the plethora of various waterfalls (with the highest waterfall being more than 70 metres high), stream cascades and various rocky formations (crags, rocky towers and windows). Unique to the site is 22-km long system of Stratená Cave and Dobšiná Ice Cave that comprises 110. 000 m3 of ice not less than 26.5m thick (both caves have been inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List). |
4.2 Quality and importance
The site is representative of a mountain range within the Western Carpathians truly unparalleled. It supports a great variety of extensive habitats of forest, rocky, meadow and wetland type in the situations of karst landscape. Local landscape features several remarkable topographic phenomena such as waterfall gorges and canyon structures. Vast stretches of natural and semi-natural forests, especially valuable of which are relic pinewoods, support exceptional biological diversity. The site also harbours well-preserved montane alderwoods and remnants of limestone beechwoods and beech-fir woods with typical attributes of natural forests. Well-preserved limestone fens, petrifying springs, rich populations of species Ligularia sibirica (streamside taxon, 98 % of its Slovak population occurs within the site), Iris aphylla subsp. hungarica (northern limit of its range), Pulsatilla slavica and Pulsatilla subslavica (typical species of rocky habitats) belong to other noteworthy eye-catchers of the site. Meadow communities also display great richness and variety of species. Highest number of vascular plants per one square metre ever observed in Central Europe has been recorded (74 different species) nowhere else but in these communities. Owing to its karstic topography, the site is ample in various cave systems (more than 200) valuable as wintering grounds for several species of resident bats. Most common inhabitants of these caves are bats Myotis myotis, Myotis emarginatus and Rhinolophus hipposideros. Important fauna species include river otter Lutra lutra and stable populations of large carnivores. The site has been designated a national park with its most valuable sections separately protected in the categories of national nature reserve, nature reserve and nature monument. |
