Other Site Characteristics

3/4 of the site are formed by well-preserved primeval forest like communities of spruce woods. Remaining part is formed by dwarf-pine formations and subalpine communities featuring a whole number of rare elements of fauna and flora. Likewise, the site is noted for the occurrence of peat bogs in the situations of subalpine location, rocky habitats with typical crevice vegetation and springs housing rich populations of Aconitum firmum subsp. moravicum. Geological basement is formed by flysch rocks of Magurie type (various sandstones and slates of the flysch sequence of layers). Pilsko topography belongs to the type of alpine meadow highlands. Simple rolling terrain of the site is enriched by numerous features of glacial and periglacial origin. Dominant soil types include Cambisols and Podzols.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is situated within the borders of the PLA Horná Orava and it has been under the continual protection since 1967 when it acquired a status of a national nature reserve. It is also situated within the Horná Orava SPA. The site supports well-preserved primeval forest like spruce woods and dwarf - pine formations representing a truly unique example of the Beskydy Mts. forest communities native to this area of Slovakia. Wooded areas provide valuable habitat for the species of large carnivores. Spring areas frequently feature annex species Aconitum firmum subsp. moravicum.
