Other Site Characteristics

The site covers the central, highest section of the Stolické vrchy Hills ridge in the section between Malý Kohút, Kohút, Stolica and Kyprov mountains. Its geological basement is formed by rocks of the crystalline complex, namely gneiss and granite with quartz veins. Northern sections of the ridge are noted for the occurrence of a number of rare plant communities associated with silicate scree.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site has been selected for its valuable complex of forest habitats typical for beech-fir to spruce forest altitudinal vegetation zones. Forests are characteristic by well-preserved natural tree species composition. Stolica site forms a part of the proposed Muránska planina and Stolické vrchy SPA and it is noted for a high diversity of bird species typical for the Carpathian forest of montane locations (e.g. Aegolius funereus, Bonasa bonasia, Aquila chrysaetos, Glaucidium passerinum, Picoides tridactylus and Tetrao urogallus). Equally characteristic of the site is the regular presence of important predators of Slovak fauna such as gray wolf Canis lupus, brown bear Ursus arctos and common lynx Lynx lynx. The site also constitutes a part of nationally important biological corridor of the national network of the Terrestrial System of Ecological Stability. Some sections of the site presently fall into the buffer zone of the Muránska planina National Park.
