Other Site Characteristics

The site is formed by flysch rocks of the Dukla unit. It consists of separate mountain ridge of Stinská and Javorník massive in Bukovské vrchy Hills on the border with Ukraine. From the Ukrainian side, the huge rocky wall made by sliding of the massive is located. On the Slovak side, there is the only one pseudokarst cave, which is an important wintering place of bats. Vegetation is represented dominantly (4/5) by beech and fir native forest ecosystems. Considering the fact the site is a very indented and rocky area difficult to be managed, a fair-sized proportion of the natural forests is present here. Within them, the Rožok and Stinská National Nature Reserves are existing protected areas. From the biodiversity point of view, the subalpine montane grasslands - poloniny - on Májková with occurrence of several spieces of national importance are important and valuable.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is located within the own territory of Poloniny National Park. Since 1967 and 1986, small part of the site has been protected as the national nature reserve and nature reserve. In 1992, the whole site became a part of the International Biosphere Reserve Východné Karpaty. The site overlaps with the proposed Bukovské vrchy SPA. It is important for protection of beech, fir-beech and maple natural native forests. The montane grasslands - so called "poloniny" that are managed with traditional methods (mowing) without a break are important in the national context. The site is the most important wintering place of bats in Bukovské vrchy Hills.
