Other Site Characteristics

Geologically the site is formed by flysch rocks of the Dukla unit. Geomorphologically, it is bordered by main Carpathian ridge from north and separate Nastaz massive from south. From the main Carpathian ridge the separate mountain ridges of Magura, Kučalata, Veľký and Malý Bukovec and Príkre massives exceed into the inside territory of the site. The mountain massives are divided with the Udavská, Ruská, Uličská and Sedlická basins. Majority of the proposed site is located above the water reservoir Starina. 2/3 of the site is dominated with the natural and native beech forests. The oak-hornbeam forests interfere into the site from south and in the valleys endings of the areas called Udava, Riaba skala (rock) and Stužica, last remnants of the fir-beech forests are preserved. Upper forest border consists of the typical maple-beech forests of the limited growth. Above them, the subalpine montane grasslands - poloniny - are located. Most of the natural forests in this area is protected within the strictly protected nature reserves. All settlements are located outside of the proposed site of European importance.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is located within the own territory of Poloniny National Park. Part of the site is protected as the national nature reserve and nature reserve. In 1992, the whole site became a part of the International Biosphere Reserve Východné Karpaty. The site overlaps with the proposed Bukovské vrchy SPA. It is important for protection of beech, fir-beech and maple natural native forests. Share of these forests is the biggest within Slovakia here. Our most important big mammals including Bison bonasus occur in these forests. The montane meadows - poloniny - are present here.
