Other Site Characteristics

The river on its stretch between Ružomberok town and the confluence with Orava River has cut a steep-sided V-shaped valley into the Šípska Fatra Mts. The valley represents major dividing line within the mountain range northern section of which used to be in the past part of Chočské vrchy Hills.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site features last unregulated stretch of the longest river of Slovakia (Váh River) in its upper and middle sections. The site harbours abundant native population of fish species Hucho hucho that has found here also ideal spawning grounds. Populations of other fish species, such as Gobio uranoscopus, Zingel streber and Cottus gobio also benefit local conditions.
