Other Site Characteristics

The site includes the southern part of the Vtáčnik mountain range. Majority of the area is covered with the well-preserved beech forest, only small parts of the site are deforested and covered with the grassland communities. From the geological point of view, the site is formed by volcanites, especially andesites, only a small part of the site is formed by limestone nappe. The site is rugged with the gorges and canyons (Bystričianska dolina valley). In places, andesite emerge to surface in a form of cliffs. Under the cliffs, the scree areas are often well-preserved.

4.2 Quality and importance

The aim of protection is to preserve a vast complex of the native forest habitats of the Vtáčnik mountain range. Significant are the well-preserved beech forest habitats on volcanites. Substantial geomorphological relief and well-preserved beech forests create the suitable conditions for the occurence of large carnivores as bear and lynx. Part of the area is protected by national legislation as the reserves (National Nature Reserve Vtáčnik, National Nature Reserve Veľká skala, Nature Reserve Makovište). The whole area belongs to the Protected Landscape Area Ponitrie. Quality and importance: The whole site belongs to the Protected Landscape Area Ponitrie, the most valuable parts are protected as the National Nature Reserves - Vtáčnik, Veľká skala, Nature Reserves - Makovište, Buchlov, Nature Monuments - Končitá, Ostrovica. Preserved forest habitats in the broken country are significant habitat for the large carnivores - bear, lynx. The area is significant for vast preserved areas of beech forest on the broken relief formed by volcanites.
