Other Site Characteristics

The site has the same name as the geomorphological subunit Čergov and it includes its south-eastern part. It is built of the outer flysch, which is represented by sandstones and exotic conglomerates, occurrence of claystones is not frequent. Geomorphology of the site was influenced not only by geological composition but also tectonic disruption of lithofacies of flysch sequences. According to the relief type, the area belongs to strongly dissected lower highlands. Forests, mostly the beech stands, cover the major part of the site (almost 99 %). The upper parts are completed with the montane meadows and pastures with the wet tall-herb communities. Lowland hay meadows occur in the lower parts of the site. Montane meadows are important features not only of the site but also the whole Čergov Mts. Relatively large area and well-preserved forest stands create suitable conditions for a stable wolf population. Many nationally important species occur in the site, e.g. animals: Sicista betulina, Glis glis, Parnassius mnemosyne; plants: Lilium bulbifeum, Scopolia carniolica, Platanthera chlorantha.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is rich in both habitats and species and due to its acreage it includes large and well-preserved various types of the beech stands. Plant species Helleborus purpurascens deserves special attention, because the species has the northwestern boundary of its distribution range in Slovakia. The site represents the most western locality of the species in Slovakia. From the network of protected areas in Slovakia 2 national nature reserves (NNR) are situated in the site: NNR Čergovská javorina and NNR Hradová hora. NNR Hradová hora was established in 1981 and NNR Čergovská javorina in 1982. Other 3 areas are proposed for protection (still in legislation process in the Regional Authority in Prešov): NR Bukový vrch, NR Ľahká voda and first private nature reserve Vlčia.
