4. SITE DESCRIPTION

4.1 General site character

Other Site Characteristics

Some two thirds of the site feature communities of 91H0* Pannonian woods with Quercus pubescens. Remaining third fosters assemblages of 6210 Semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates (Festuco-Brometalia) and 6240* Sub-Pannonic steppic grasslands communities of which have been partially taken over by pioneer tree species (initial seral stage of forest). Geological basement is formed by carbonate rocks predominate of which are limestone and dolomite. These sporadically protrude surface to form exposed rocky outcrops. Due to the basement, local soils are typical for a high content of skeletic particles. The site encompasses an exceptionally high number of underground cavities, abysses and caves (8310 Caves not open to public) and supports likewise high number of species of international importance (Bupleurum falcatum subsp. dilatatum, Thlaspi caerulescens subsp. tatrense, Hyla arborea, Rana dalmatina, Lacerta viridis, Ablepharus kitaibelii, Glis (Myoxus) glis, Coronella austriaca, several different species of bats, Felis silvestris). Representatives of species protected by Slovak law include, among many others, plant beauties Aconitum anthora and Cephalanthera rubra.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is situated in the Slovenský kras NP / Slovak Karst NP holding at the same time the status of the UNESCO - MAB Biosphere Reserve. It also falls within the territory of the Important Bird Area (IBA) Slovenský kras and pending Slovenský kras SPA. Its habitats provide valuable nesting grounds for populations of a number of bird species of European importance including Lanius collurio, Lullula arborea, Caprimulgus europaeus, Sylvia nisoria and Picus canus. Bird species of national importance are, among others, represented by species Jynx torquilla. The site is noted for plethora of underground karstic features of outstanding natural beauty (caves, abysses) that have under the name "Caves of Aggtelek and Slovak Karst" been inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List (cross border site with Hungary). These underground phenomena represent important wintering grounds for a number of bat species. Underground karstic system Baradla - Domica has been entered into the List of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. The site fosters best examples of warmth-loving plant communities found on the territory of Slovenský kras NP. The site was designated a national nature reserve in 1973.
