Other Site Characteristics

The area of European importance The Horný tok Ondavy starts under the village of Nižný Orlík and ends at the bridge over the Ondava river near the Lomná village. The parts of the flow in the Svidník town and Stropkov town, part of the flow near the Stročín village, was not included in the territory, so the territory is made up of several polygons. The river has a high flow rate and hydrogeological productivity. From the point of view of the type of drainage regime, Ondava belongs to the highland and lowland region with rainy and snow outflow with the culmination of river outflow in March or April. Ondava is the main branch of the river system that forms Bodrog river in the Tisa river collecting zone. The geomorphologically proposed territory of Ondava belongs to the Ondavská vrchovina whole and the wider surroundings of the proposed protected area is built by an external flysch, where the Magurská tectonic unit is represented by the Račianska unit and in the section above the Lomné is represented by Bystrická lithological facies of sediments. The site is a significant migratory biocorridor in the bird's way and it is also a significant nesting, breeding place of several avifauna species. The occurrence of many animal species of European significance, of the birds of Alcedo atthis, Ciconia ciconia, Ciconia, nigra, Picus canus, Egretta alba, mammals have a significant presence of otter, the presence of beaver, amphibians Bombina variegata, Unio crassus and others. Significant is the representation of fish, overall in the stream of Ondava recorded up to 9 species, of species of European importance, for example Eudontomyzon danfordi - occurs mainly in unregulated meanders of the flow.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is a complex of habitats in which ash-alder foothill floodplain forests are complemented by the high-herbaceous communities of wet meadows and bank vegetation of Petasites officinalis. It is characterized by a high diversity of animal species, especialy with the presence of species temporarily and permanently attached to the hydrophobic environment. Many species of national importance were noticed, from bats, for example, Myotis daubentonii, from reptiles the Natrix natrix, Elaphe longissima, from amphibians the Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea, Rana ridibunda and others.
