Lokaliteten består af et stort fladvandet tidevandsområde med sand- og slikflader, der er adskilt af dybe render. Enkelte sandbanker - højsandene - bliver ikke overskyllet ved normalt højvande. I området indgår enkelte småøer, hvoraf Jordsand er den største.

4.2 Quality and importance

Området er en fuglelokalitet af den allerstørste betydning. Lokaliteten rummer meget betydelige ynglebestande af en lang række Appendix I arter. Endnu vigtigere er de enorme rastforekomster, området er således af international betydning for mindst 22 arter af vandfugle mens yderligere 5 i hvert fald tidligere er forekommet i internationalt betydende antal. Området rummer store dele af året langt mere end 20.000 vandfugle. Vadehavsområdet i bred betydning det vil sige nærværende område plus de tilgrænsende EF-beskyttelsesområder nr. 49, 52, 53, 55, 60, 65 og 67 er den internationalt mest betydende danske fuglelokalitet.
