Other Site Characteristics

This site, lying within the Prefecture of Argolida, is a steep rocky hill with a fortress of historical importance on its summit. It is a remarkable monument that attracts the tourists interest. It is very close to the city of Nafplio (the first capital of Greece) and has a historical and also aesthetic value. This rocky hill exhibits a rather interesting habitat of some regional endemic plants (Stachys swainsonii subsp. argolica, Campanula andrewsii subsp. andrewsii, Petrorhagia armerioides var. armerioides, etc.) and also a considerable vertebrate fauna. The area has been touristically developed, so, these human activities cause negative influences on the natural ecosystem. Geologically, the site belongs to the Sub-pelagonian zone (zone of the Eastern Greece) which is characterized of shale-sandstone-chert formations (shaly-marl beds with sandstones, limestones and sometimes marly cherts).

4.2 Quality and importance

This site has historical interest and aesthetic value, which attract many tourists. Its flora is rather poor as concerns its floristic composition but contains some rare and endemic plants (section 3.3). Although the combination of historical, floristic and zoological information could be of interest to visitors, the tourist development of the area negatively affects its flora and fauna. So, with a good management, the tourist facilities, the fortress, the endemic plants and the animals could possibly coexist.A considerable vertebrate fauna (excluding birds) has been reported as occurring in this site, including some species in Annex II of the 92/43/EEC Directive (see section 3.2) and some Other Important Species (see section 3.3). Among the taxa of the latter two groups, the most notable are the endemic lacertid lizards, Algyroides moreoticus and Podarcis peloponnesiaca, which are therefore given motivation B.
