- PF: for the habitat types that can have a non-priority as well as a priority form (6210, 7130, 9430) enter "X" in the column PF to indicate the priority form.
- NP: in case that a habitat type no longer exists in the site enter: x (optional)
- Cover: decimal values can be entered
- Caves: for habitat types 8310, 8330 (caves) enter the number of caves if estimated surface is not available.
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation)

- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, I = Invertebrates, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
- Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)
3.3 Other important species of flora and fauna (optional)
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, Fu = Fungi, I = Invertebrates, L = Lichens, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- CODE: for Birds, Annex IV and V species the code as provided in the reference portal should be used in addition to the scientific name
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting, (see reference portal)
- Cat.: Abundance categories: C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present
- Motivation categories: IV, V: Annex Species (Habitats Directive), A: National Red List data; B: Endemics; C: International Conventions; D: other reasons

Other Site Characteristics
The site is a group of islands on the south of Kyhtira island: Antikythira, Thymonies, Pseira, Plakoulithra, Lagouvardos and Prasonisi. Most of the islands are characterised by steep sea-cliffs with a plateau on the top. Antikythira is the larger island of the group. It has an area of 20 Km2 and a maximum altitude of 378 m. Few inhabitants live there throughout the year. The dominant rock is limestone (Triassic and Cretaceous) but there are some Neogene deposits, too.The dominant vegetation is low maquis and phrygana , while part of the island is cultivated with cereals. Antikythira is one of the drier locations in Greece, receiving annualy less than 200 mm of rainfall. Prasonisi is located 7.5 Km N-NW of Antikythira. Its area is about 0.27 Km2 and its maximum altitude 129 m. It consists of limestones. The vegetation consists mainly of herbaceous plants (phryganic and halophytic) but there is a thick body of maquis shrubs at the westwern side. Lagouvardos island is located 7.2 Km NW of Antikythira and 3 Km from Prasonisi. Its area is about 0.06 Km2 and its maximum altitude 42 m. It consists of limestone rocks. Halophilous herbs and a few Gramineae are the only plants growing there. |
4.2 Quality and importance
The group of islands that comprise the site is of great biogeographical interest, as it is a zone influenced by both continental and S. Aegean faunistic and floristic elements and its flora, at least, is differentiated even from that the closest island, Kythira, located between Antikythira and the mainland (Peloponnesos). This fact is indicative of the ecological quality of the site and of its importance for conservation. Particular elements of the ecological importance of the site are:1) It is an important area for the migratory bird species. 2) The Mediterranean monk seal is resident in the site. 3) The reptile species present in the site (listed on section 3.3.) are protected by the Bern Convention and by the Greek Law (Presidential Decree 67/1981) and some of them are considered species of Community interest (Directive 92/43/EEC). 4) The invertebrate fauna is interesting. In addition, ancient sand-dunes with fossils of many gastropod species (most psychrophilic) in Potamos harbour are of great scientific interest. 5) The flora of this group of islands has not been adequately studied, but the few existing data indicate its interest. |
