Other Site Characteristics

The area covers the eastern part of the Bakony Hills. Its two most significant sub-areas are the Tsi plateau and the Burok-valley. The Tsi plateau is the largest plateau of the region of the Bakony Hills. It is bordered by sharp breakdowns and dicth-like depressions from each side. The 400-570 m height plateau falls onto the foreground with steep slopes. Its surface is predominantly built from carbonate base rocks (limestone, dolomite), while hillside slopes are covered by detrital slope loess. On dolomite special vegetation types developed (mixed karstic forests, sumac-white oak low woods, closed dolomite rock grasses etc.) which conserved even glacial relicts. To these characteristic vegetation types other valuable associations join in ravines and in areas of northern exposure. The diverse vegetation provides good life conditions for several rare, mountaneous, sub-mountaneous and mediterranean animal species.

At a national scale important stands of unique of Cephalantero-Fagion association bounded to dolomite can be found here. The area is of outstanding value because continental flora elements moving upwards from the Mezofld, the submediterranean plant rarities, glacial relicts and relict endemisms bound to dolomite occur here together. On the foothills, by the effect of karstic waters upwelling to the surface, wet and drying fens have developed. Under the Tsi plateau several valuable caves and dolinas are be found.
