Other Site Characteristics

The site is located on the bottom part of the Kli-basin. The 15 ha Kornyi-lake situated in the south of the site is the largest natural standing water of the Balaton Uplands, and it is predominantly covered with reed. The shallow lake is a valuable habitat for birds which unfortunately dried out due to the drought of the last three years. Its base is consisted of carbonate rock, but the bed is covered with watertight clay. It is fed by meteoric water and by rising karstic water. The northern ca. 60 ha part of the site is the Ssdi-rt (Ssdi-meadow). Diverse vegetation can be found here: thermophilous oak forests, Pannonic scrubs, Pannonic slope steppes, rock grass slope steppes, reed-stands, purple moorgrass (drying) fen, sedge stands. Beside the bed of the Ssdi-creek, several drainage ditches can be found as the result of one-time melioration. The base rock of the area is consisted of Triassic carbonate rocks, mainly dolomite. It is a karstic area partly covered with loose sediments where several open karstic spots appear. The most valuable vegetation types developed on peat are: Junco obtusiflori-Schoenetum nigricantis, Seslerietum uliginosae, Juncetum subnodulosi, Cladio-Schoenetum.

In spite of this fact it is still a significant site for avifauna. In 2003 39 bird species were recorded. The flora of the slightly degradated steppe meadow surrounding the lake - where a large souslik population lives - is less significant. In deeper lying areas lapwing nests. To the west from the lake the most significant white oak forest of the basin can be found. The outstanding natural value of the Ssdi-meadow is the mosaic appearance of fresh and drying fens and different xerotherm vegetation types (mainly steppe meadows, steppe slopes, white oak forest fragments, steppe scrub stands). Fens belong to our most endangered vegetation types.

Main tasks: Kornyi-lake: to prevent the lake from the washing in of contaminants, control invasive species, determination of the degree of grazing and the type of mowing around the lake. Ssdi-meadow: to conserve the exceptional botanical and zoological values, maintain the naturalness of vegetation types, to regenerate more degradated stands with proper management. Hayfields and pastures: to avoid over-grazing, to keep proper mowing dates, leave unmowed spots in different places in different years. Continuation of habitat reconstruction in the Ssdi-meadow.
