Other Site Characteristics

The area is situated on the alluvial plain valley of river Marcal mildly sloping to the north. On the plain holocene mud and different fen sediments can be found on the surface. Under them Pannonic sediments can be found in a thin layer. The small hillsides uprising from the plain are predominantly built from gravel, in smaller amount sandy and loessy slope sediments can also be recognised. The site is the mosaic of arable and uncultivated fields, dry grasses, humid grasslands and tall herb communities, sedge tussocks, fens, marshes, smaller strips of alder and willow, hardwood groves and artifical forest plantations. Most of earlier gravel and sand-pits are grown over by the vegetation.

However large part of the area was drained, large valuable water dependent habitats and vegetation types survived in a relatively good condition. The Marcal River flows in an artificial bed through the site.
