Other Site Characteristics

It is a basalt witness butte uprising from the Tapolca-basin with sharp escarpments at the edges. Deflation and erosion caused by millions of years can be well studied. Outstanding and famous geological values of the northern side are the prepared 'basalt organ-pipes'. Rock grasses located at the edges conserved isolated populations of rare species. On the skirt of the hill grape has been grown since the medieval age and became a characteristic landscape element. Architectural monuments related to viticulture and characteristic to the Balaton Uplands are also conserved (vine cellars, press-houses, hill chapels).

Several botanical rarities live in the extreme climatic and geological conditions. The abundance of yellow golden alyssum on the basalt columns is picturesque. Habitats remained in a good natural state, silicate rock grasses are the most siginificant of them. On the sunny rocks of the hill a small population of Cheilanthes marantae (unique in Hungary) occurs. The presence of Paracaloptenus caloptenoides is an outstanding value.
