Other Site Characteristics

The flat area is bordered by witness buttes from the east. In N-S direction five creeks are crossing it. Once part of Lake Balaton, it is now a peaty area the watercourse of which was significantly changed by draining, removal of karstic water due to bauxite mining and the bed regulation of crossing creeks. It can be characterised by the mosaic of large hayfields, reed beds and marshes. After the removal of karstic water had stopped, several spring started to flow again at the northern edge of the area positively effecting the whole area.
