Other Site Characteristics

Keszthelyi hills are located on the northwest side of Lake Balaton and includes many habitat type mosaics together. Geologically this site has built up both sedimental (dolomite and lime stones) and volcanic stones resulting varied morphology and vegetation. Unfortunately in the middle of the 20th Century Pinus nigra were planted in huge numbers to the rocky slopes, even into valuable (ie. rich in endemic and protected species) dolomitic grasslands. In contrast, there are conserved natural forests on calcareous and silicate rocky slopes, Fagus silvatica forest on basaltic hilltops. In valleys and in lower areas alkaline fens and mesophilous meadows can be found as well. Caves of the site are important to wintering bat populations.
